Are You Going to Heaven? Part 2

The other day, I was reading a scripture that I know I had read many times, but it hit me in a different way. In Matthew 7:13, Jesus is telling us to “enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” What stuck out to me is Jesus is saying there are MANY who will perish and only FEW who will have everlasting life. It just never dawned on me before that there would be more people in hell than in heaven…and judging by this passage, it’s a significant difference. That’s so sad to me and I can’t help but wonder if some people get caught up in thinking because they believe there’s a God, they’re good. Or because they go to church, they must be saved.

Jesus was saying the wide gate is easy to go through! It’s easy to believe there’s a God. It’s easy to believe in Jesus without ever confessing Him as your Savior. It’s even easy to confess Him as Lord without actually believing in your heart. You see, I don’t think this is done intentionally…I think many people are deceived into thinking they’re saved when they’re not. If you would have asked me years ago, I would have said, “Of course I’m saved. I believe in Jesus! I’m a Christian, don’t you know!” But I wasn’t because 1) I didn’t believe in my heart and 2) I had never confessed Jesus as Lord. This is why I never want to assume anyone is saved!

Being baptized as an infant, becoming a member of a church, going through confirmation–none of those things will get you saved and none of those indicate that you are saved. I know because I did all three and wasn’t saved! What I didn’t know was the scripture in Romans 10:9. It clearly tells us to be saved, we need to confess with our mouths and believe with our hearts. By believing in Jesus, confessing His name and living for Him, that’s the narrow gate and it leads to everlasting life.
